Editing task and analysis

In the opening scene of inception has an element of multi strand narrative, where the different characters are in different phases, between a dream and real life. This is backed up by the cross cutting of two scenes to establish continuity. This is also known as continuity editing where two shots are placed logically so one event distinguishes the other event. In this case the fighting scene distinguishes the scene where the characters are sleeping which tells us that they are in a dream. This scene draws the audience in as there is a usage of match on action and 180 degree rule. This is where it continuously cuts to the character speaking and the 180 degree rule adds realism.
In the opening scene of inception, slow motion has been used as the character fell backwards into the bath tub. This creates anxiety and keeps the audience 'on their toes'. The use of music being parallel and non-diagetic increasing tension for the audience. The music starts very low and slow at the beginning allowing the audience to understand the scene and towards the middle, the music gets louder and faster suggesting action and makes everything tense. At 1:56, the camera starts shaking vigorously as the bricks start falling from the ceiling which also adds realism and draws the audience in. It makes the audience feel present. There is a lot of cutting in this scene backed up by the music allowing action to be portrayed which is an effective editing technique which appeals to the audience and disregards boredom.
