Preliminary: Research and planning

There are loads more tips and tutorials from Darius Britt (D4Darius on YouTube) that we would recommend watching as part of your research and planning. These include:

Now complete the following tasks:

1) State the genre you have chosen for your TV drama - family or crime drama.

Family drama with a mix of crime in order to keep the audience on their feet.
2) Choose at least three TV dramas similar to your concept and watch the trailer and one scene from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene.

  • The intent
  • Topboy
  • Luther
  1. The camera work is very rapid to add sense of crime but also revolves around 2 brothers making it a family drama.
  2. There will be little to no motivated lighting due to it being set in the dark to add a sense of crime. Therefore i shall be using single lighting to make the characters visible but also make it seem like it s night time

3) Write a script for your TV drama scene. You'll find guidance for writing a script in the BBC Writers' Room (click on the Script Library to read real examples of professional TV scripts).
Sajin calls samie

Sajin:' Bro i need your help i done something so stupid, please come collect me'
Samie:'Ive told you many times to fix up WHERE ARE YOU!

Samie reads the text sent my Sajin and immediately departures

Samie is running vigourosly

Biggie (The killer): 'Ay yo i think i see Sajin'

Biggie pulls out a gun and shoots Samie

Mandeep came to a realisation that Samie is dead because of Sajin

Mandeep phones Sajin with emotion

Mandeep: i just of the phone with my cousin, samies dead samie' dead man!its all your fault!

Sajin comes to the realisation of what hes done

Sajin texts V1 about what happens and assembles a crew

4) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing. These additional shots are often close-ups, cutaways, alternative angles or similar. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word to set out your shot list - you can find an example here

5) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre? Plan your cast, costume, make-up, props, lighting and setting. For this preliminary task, use just one location to keep it simple.
Costume:
My characters will be wearing a casual look being jeans and a hoodie whereby represented the average teenage look allowing myself to reinforce the stereotype. The hoodie being an informal piece of clothing communicates non seriousnessspossiblylence and represents that long gang look. This links to my statement of intent as it reinforces the stereotype that young kids dont dress up formal and do good for themselves and backed up by the location being a car park in the night.

Lighting:
I will use lighting to portray the characters face but at the same time use motivated lighting being the natural darkness to add the sense of danger and unease for the audience. It will be mostly exterior as there is a war between gangs occurring which is a never ending cycle. I may use street lights also as a tool of natural lighting. Further more behind the camera i will have 1 artificial lighting.

Actors:
I will have young teenagers from my year as it is revolved around violence between youth. In my production i will have two brothers who look identically the same. One villian who kills one of the protagonists and the protagonists friends who aid in the revenge of the villian who killed to protagonist. Furthermore i will cast characters with similar personality to add a sense of realism. They will appear in a lot of wide shots to show it is out in the open.

Make-up
No make-up needed as natural look make give realism

Prop

In public whereby i use a gun and a getaway car to show the activites of a teenage boy but will be resembled in private place as i am using a gun which is not appropriate in a school location.

6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required and what shots you will complete at each time/location.
Location: Car park
Bridge
Home

Time: Night time with darknessOptional additional planning: Storyboard key shots from your scene. What visual style are you trying to create? Storyboard sheets are available in DF07.
